Batman and Robin #19, March 2011, written by Paul Cornell, penciled by Scott McDaniel
I love Paul Cornell. And any thoughts that I might have only liked him because of his work on Captain Britain (and therefore peripheral X-Characters) were refuted by his work on Knight & Squire, which I also enjoy. So I don’t know what to make of this. I think the story was sound but I just didn’t end up caring about it or really enjoy reading it. It was competent and I think it hit upon some larger Batman themes I haven’t seen explored yet (what happens to Bruce Wayne’s one night stands) but…meh. This might have to do with the art, which I don’t want to speak ill of. Scott McDaniel is talented. Yes. He can draw people and is a good storyteller. I just don’t think his style is for me. It’s just a little too late ’90s for me and reminiscent of a lot of artists I didn’t like back then. That’s just my taste!
As I was reading this I decided that this would be my last issue, but now that I see that Patrick Gleason is the new artist (with Peter J. Tomasi, who I have honestly never read before) I’m kinda curious. This is why I can’t drop books!
My Score: 7.4
